CCMD™ Mission Statement
The Committee on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases™ (CCMD™) is a
multifaceted educational initiative comprising continuing medical education (CME)
programs that focus on the management of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases to
prevent or reduce global cardiovascular risk. Launched in 1996 as Lipid Management
in Clinical Practice, the initiative evolved into the widely recognized and respected
National Lipid Education Council
® (NLEC
®) and in 2006
has expanded into the CCMD. The CCMD stands as a premier, independent initiative
guided by a multidisciplinary panel of experts in cardiology, endocrinology, and
primary care.
Since its inception, the CCMD has focused on educating physicians and other healthcare
professionals about the rationale for aggressive cholesterol-lowering therapy, specifically
to achieve LDL-C targets, in order to prevent or manage adverse cardiovascular events.
Given that its curriculum is based on the evolving landscape of clinical-trial data
and therapeutic guidelines, the content is continually adjusted and refined to reflect
the latest clinically relevant findings. Recognizing that elevated LDL-C and other
types of dyslipidemia encompass only one component of cardiovascular disease,
the CCMD incorporates a global cardiovascular risk focus and highlights other conditions
affecting the vasculature, including—but not limited to—inflammation,
hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
Acknowledging the vast array of education preferences among adult learners, the
CCMD reaches out to its audiences through both traditional and state-of-the-art
education venues. Proven program formats include live, interactive meetings; audioconferences;
webcasts; newsletters; and online CME activities through its website, CCMDweb.org,
formerly the award-winning lipidhealth.org.
Co-chaired by Antonio M. Gotto, Jr, MD, DPhil and Robert H. Eckel, MD, and led by an Education Council of esteemed
thought leaders, the CCMD draws on the expertise of 50 faculty members.
The CCMD is sponsored by Professional Postgraduate Services
® (PPS),
Secaucus, NJ. PPS is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
